CD-a-Day - Antidiluvian Edition

Black Eyed Sceva: Way Before the Flood

One of my favorite albums, this is a perfect first entry in CD-a-Day for 2010.  Shandree saw them live, and I had friends who knew them.  Alas, I never had the chance to meet Black Eyed Sceva or see them play, but I spun the disc relentlessly.  An unapologetically Christian band, these guys were about thoughtful inspection of the human condition from a Christ-Worshipping standpoint.  They also did something that made them stand well apart from other contemporary Christian bands: They had genuine artistry.  Now, don't make the mistake that other Christian bands of the time didn't have talent.  I'm not saying that.  I'm saying that BES did interesting things with their form that made them unique.  And while I can admit that some of the songs feel dated now, twice removed from the decade they inhabited, I still think the songs are solid and relevant.  It's nice when a band with similar worldviews isn't an embarrassment...
