Jeff Buckley: Grace

I only got this last year. I wouldn't have liked it in '94 when it was originally released. My tastes where running directly towards the grunge material, and Jeff's pretty voice and lilting arrangements would've been over my twenty year-old head. Listening now, however, I appreciate the difference that Jeff represented. He was a golden child in a sea of samey dirt-rock. While not all of his arrangements hold up today, I think the majority of Grace has some pertinent and interesting music that still stands apart.

Of course, we'll never know how he would've ended up, since he died prematurely, drowning in the Mississippi. Most accounts say his incomplete second album, "Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk" was remarkable. Had it been finished, perhaps it would have cemented his "greatness". But a stupid mistake ended Buckley's run. In some ways, it made him legendary. Sadly, most good legends end in tragedy.
